I knew about the blast at Site-41, but I never knew why so many technicians and personnel were killed, including Nedelin himself. Till I found this... http://www.russianspaceweb.com/r16_disaster.html With people scurrying-around to insure that the first-stage boosters would sufficiently engage, the R-16's second-stage boosters ignited while still-on-the-pad. 3. Wink The Maya, Archaeology and 2012

The Maya, Archaeology and 2012 February 10, 2010 By JIM REED “All was mystery, dark, impenetrable mystery, and every circumstance increased it.” So wrote 19th century explorer John Lloyd Stephens after journeying through the rainforests of Mesoamerica in search of cities long shrouded under a dense canopy of vegetation. Today, some of the mystery has been dispelled. Their great cities, their architecture and their art challenged the splendour of the ancient capitals of Asia and Africa. While Europe languished in the Dark Ages, the Maya devised sophisticated mathematical and astronomical concepts, wrote books and developed trade routes that spanned much of Mesoamerica. They derived many cultural forms from the north, but also devised many cultural innovations that profoundly influenced all subsequent cultures in the area. Much of Maya culture, particularly the religious reckoning of time, is still a vital aspect of Native American life in Guatemala and Honduras. All that the ancient Maya...

  6. Survivors of 1935 Key West Hurricane recall Terrible Night

It was the Labor Day storm in 1935. This was before naming of storms began, before they had accurate track forecasting (well more accurate now than what they did then). It's rather chilling to read and I can only imagine what it must have been like for them. Now comes their stories of the night: http://www2.tbo.com/content/2010/may/15/survivors-1935-key-west-hurricane-recall-terrible-/news-breaking/

  7. The confederate states of America.

An interesting uchronical film that ponders the alternative time line of US history and culture if the south had won the civil war. The mockumentary centers around how slavery would have developed itself over the centuries. From the promises of "Dishonest Abe" and the civil war. To the purchase of slaves and electronic control mechanisms over the Internet. But also offers a glimp on how the country would have developed itself facing the second world war. Wall street crash and a cold war with Canada. In between the segments are commercial blocks. Selling typical commercials for the wrong products that actually existed not that long ago. Bizarre shows and a news clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EViGaTSnqRw

Modern history that goes back well in time to the dark ages and perhaps beyond I messed the title up, I didnt want just politicians but also business people included past and present, powerful familys that seem to have ties with eachother in some way. Well where do I start, this is a big tree and quite complicated. It all started with 2 people but more research can be done, Alfred the Great and Ealswith of Mercia.

  9. LYCANOX: On socialist germany and rise of nazism

If it’s such a fact, then how come every time for the past few posts, when I have requested a LINK you did not deliver. The only link you did deliver was one that had nothing to do with your position. And now you cite a movie as proof that hitler hated socialism, while I have cited a reputable book on socialistic economics and 1930 Germany proving definitively that Germany was socialistic. And I also gave prime examples of his economic structure as well as an example where Hitler was essentially the CEO of every major business, which is socialism. In case you have forgotten what socialism is, here is the definition: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/socialism 1930s Germany fits those two descriptions exactly.

  10. Brother Dan & Sister Ann

I'm researching a local tale here, in Pittsburgh, concerning Brother Dan & Sister Ann. I may have this all wrong, but this story has been told so often that it must have some truth, and plenty of confusion. Sometime in the 1950s, these 2 pre-evangelicals called their flock to sell everything and gather on the 9th Street Bridge to await the end of the days. Nothing happened, so the date was revised, and that went on for several decades . . . but the flock grew and grew each time the prediction failed. Here's the kicker: I've been told that Brother Dan & Sister Ann turned this flock into The Jehovah's Witness. Does anyone have any info on an "End of the World" event in Pittsburgh? Ray Bright

  13. Ukraine's Unknown Holocaust

http://www.faminegenocide.com/resources/unknown.html This is something I had never heard of. Between 1932 and 1933, Josef Stalin, in an attempt to force Ukrainian's independent farmers into "collectivized Soviet agriculture" and to crush Ukrainian nationalism, set about committing genocide by starvation. At least 7 million died. Read the whole article but here are some highlights. "During the bitter winter of 1932-33, mass starvation created by Kaganovitch and 0GPU hit full force. Ukrainians ate their pets, boots and belts, plus bark and roots. Some parents even ate infant children. The precise number of Ukrainians murdered by Stalin's custom-made famine and Cheka firing squads remains unknown to this day. The KGB's archives, and recent work by Russian historians, show at least seven million died. Ukrainian historians put the figure at nine million, or higher. Twenty-five percent of Ukraine's population was exterminated. While the world is by now fully aware of the destruction of Europe's...

  14. Eugenics...

My college prof doesn't feel too good about me doing my thesis paper on eugenics, since I'm a business major. But in my mind, business, statistics, philosophy, you name it, all go together under the umbrella of eugenicists. Does anyone feel I'm wrong? And just a ramdon question for my research into the paper, what do you feel are real modern day examples (backed up with good sources) of eugenics in taking place now?

  16. Red face War People Farming Kill Alpha Ranch Passive

Production of H2onE2 University Second Life virtual campus http://slurl.com/secondlife/Chief/187/166/103 Soldiers, politicians and the Holy Church all declare war to be an abomination and yet two global wars were fought in the last century and many conflicts since, some deliberately escalated. At first glance, it would appear that war is fought for two reasons defense or conquest. If this holds true than every military engagement can be quantified as either defensive or offensive. The problem with attempting to explain every military operation as either defensive or offensive comes with three major issues. The repetitive military mistakes and blunders, successive attempts at defending an un-supply-able position and the full implementation of a physical, psychological and media (PPM) driven campaign of escalation designed to enrage resistance and empower an insurgence. The third factor of war will be termed escalation and this can be explained as neither defensive nor offensive. At least, not under...

  17. Historical heroes with a dark side?

Hi, I'm currently researching a paper on historical heroes who either weren't particularly heroic, had a dark side, or who were down right evil. I'm at the beginnings of my research and off the top of my head came up with Henry V of England, Francis Drake and Che Guevara. It would be really interesting to get anyone's suggestions on this topic, and maybe start a debate going on individual figures. E.g. were any cruel acts acceptable in the era they were committed, and did the 'hero' have to be bad to be good (if you see what I mean - che is one example of where his supporters would argue his executions etc were necessary to the continued success of the revolution)? Ideally I want to find people who went too far - even by the standards of the day, but through patriotic rose tinted spectacles have become national heroes. Henry V is a good example of this. Thanks in advance - looking forward to seeing your thoughts.

  19. The Industrial Revolutions

The Industrial Revolution is normally attached to steam engines and coal-powered locomotives, and in many cases attached to the United States post-1865. The U.S. was part of the First Industrial Revolution, the one the world overlooks. The images of billowing smoke pouring from train engines, steam-powered ships coasting along the surfaces of Southern rivers, and the blacken-faced coal miners posing for the camera after a mine collapse, are all part of the Second Industrial Revolution: the second wave in factory labor and mechanized output, all feeding into a hungry and growing global market--one so starved and poised, ready for change, that its hunger would change the world nearly overnight. Most people see it as the Industrial Revolution and have no idea there were two distinct revolutions, one begun and proliferated by England and another the feeders chewing on its success. The First revolution fed the Second, the First changing the way the world found success and the Second completely altering the...

  20. Luckiest or Unluckiest Man in the World?

Kyodo reported yesterday that Tsutomu Yamaguchi, one of the handful of people to survive the atomic bombings of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, has finally been recognised as such by the Nagasaki local government. Four years ago, shortly before the 60th anniversary of the end of the war, I interviewed Mr Yamaguchi, and two of his fellow double-hibakusha, over the course of several days. Here is the long piece which I wrote about them for the Times Magazine. See below a photograph of Mr Yamaguchi next to a replica of the "Fat Man", by an outsanding photographer, Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert, who has also blogged on our assigment here.] Tsutomu Yamaguchi, Akira Iwanaga and Kuniyoshi Sato are either the luckiest or the unluckiest men alive, and after three days in their company and long hours of conversation, I still had no idea which. It is sixty years since their monstrous ordeal and all three are well into their ninth decade. Mr Sato, who is 86, uses a wheelchair after injuring his back, and 89-year old Mr...
