Due to some misconceptions dealing with the Owens Valley rift and the subsequent reactions within The long Valley volcanic region, I will try to shed some light as to what poses a threat in future seismic activity. What most people miss, is the larger picture of surrounding tectonic actions, in this case the dog leg bend of the southern end of the San Andreas fault. At the Tehachapi range, you have a distinct bend taking place with the predominant north/ south direction of the Sierra Nevada mountains. As the north moving section of the fault is liturally forcing a clockwise turn of the south end of the range. With this action comes a thinning of the crust along the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada's, to be specific, a rift. And along with this rifting you have the subsequent doming of shallow mantle material, along with surface rupture within the Long Valley volcanic area.
