  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: Pseudoscience: How to spot a Crackpot

Crackpots are everywhere. They tend to claim to be victims of conspiratorial censorship. They often believe that their "revolutionary" theory will unify science with some other field of study. They see themselves as the brave pioneer fighting against the old Establishment, the latter being too entrenched in their ways to see the Truth. They feel that fear alone, or perhaps some power conspiracy, is what stops real scientists from accepting their theory, and that if only they were given a fair chance they could revolutionize science and more. They are also sadly mistaken. And I do mean sadly. So how can you tell if you're being bewitched by a crackpot? That's what this thread is about.

  1. Runaway greenhouse effect

CO2, the celebrated poster child of global warming has had its run in the media, as well as compiled scientific reasoning to back the man made theory. But as with most researched study, science evolves like anything else, new data, constructed dating with previous plant life and Fauna, and detailed correlation between die off's and geological events. What gets revealed with this continued study is that CO2 isn't the factor behind increased global temperatures....much to the disappointment of current politically correct thinking. To hammer this vital point home, you have to look at what the record shows, both in ice and fauna, not just assumptions built on present day media hype. "The proof that CO2 does not drive climate is shown by previous glaciations...If the popular catastrophist view is accepted, then there should have been a runaway greenhouse when CO2 was more than 4000 ppmv. Instead there was glaciation. Clearly a high atmospheric CO2 does not drive global warming and there is no correlation...

  4. e to the mc squared but slowliness is inverse of speed attribute

slowliness is inverse of speed just as conductivity is inverse of resistance so E = mc^2 can be rewritten as ES=MC which reads: "the slowliness of energy is speed of matter and vice versus the inverse way around"

  6. The Secret of Beauty

Unlocking the Secret of Beauty: Scientists Discover the Complexities of Attractive Female Bodies The results showed that there was a strong level of agreement between the 4 groups of Australian men and women, and Hong Kong men and women, with scans of younger, taller and lighter women being rated as more attractive. Women with narrow waists, especially relative to their height, were also considered much more attractive. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/09/100928083844.htm Young and tall women with waists relative to their height. I could go for that. But they don't always have to be tall or lighter ( ? ), thin. Sometimes for me it is not always the body, something about the face . OK that is the first five seconds then it is the body. I think it is something about first impressions. One lady I remember had acne scares but body wise everything fit. First impression was a very attractive woman. First date she tried to cover the acne scares with to much makeup. Shallow me, that was the last...

  14. Mantle hot spots and Volcanics

A topic seldom understood is the function of continental and oceanic hot spot mantel plums and their theoretic mechanisms. For simplicity I'll keep this centered on the widely held views and somewhat accepted definitions of plate tectonics. First off we have to have a picture of whats taking place within the boundary zones of surface crust and molten material, which by any stretch of the imagination is not uniform. To simplify this you have current plate material that is moving in a given direction over a ancient rift margin that has allowed molten magma to reach the surface. One example of this phenomena is the Hawaiian island chain, with its recurrent cone building process. With the westward drift of the lithosphere in the form of the Pacific plate, it passes over one of these ancient rift boundary plumes and the ejected material literally builds an island from the sea floor up, and as this plate continues westward over a given time, a new cone is developed and with it another island, till you have...

  17. Thousands of exoplanets orbiting a single star

Very cool. Unfortunately I could not find the animation from YouTube to imbed. It shows in an interesting presentation of all the exoplanets (planets outside of our solar system) discovered thus far. And it illustrates what a star would look like if it contained all these planets we have so far discovered. Basically, we've found many planets outside our solar system. Some of them a distance from their star similar to an astronomical unit (distance between the Earth and the Sun).

  18. Water vapor and global warming

When we first started debating climate change some years ago, several of us collaborated on a simplified picture of a terrarium, something like the classic glass version from the high school science class. For all practical purposes our planets atmosphere creates the same conditions with water vapor and other greenhouse gasses combined with heat to rise to higher elevations until dew point is reached, thus returning to the surface in the form of rain. This rather simplified picture is being looked at with closer research by the scientific community dealing specifically with water vapor. For years the culprit label has been stamped on emissions, especially man made CO2s and other carbon based materials as being responsible for global warming. But man may well be the culprit after all, but from another source altogether.. Here is a quote from Reid Bryson, Emeritus Professor Department of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, that puts some light on whats taking place. "Well let me give you one fact...

  19. Universe Grows Like A Giant Brain

Not sure how I missed this story back in November! Live Science has the story. The study itself is at Arvix.org, titled "Network Cosmology". (PDF) I know it doesn't say the universe IS a big brain... but I like to imagine what if the Universe is a live being of some sort, sentient, and that we are organisms, maybe even likened to bacteria or something, living within. Seeing slides beneath the microscope of cells that look so much like pictures of space, and reading stuff like this fuels my imagination even further. :-)
